The Young Intern And JFK...

AUSTIN, Texas - It's too bad that it was a different time in America, especially for the press. Much has come out about politicians of those days, about Richard M. Nixon being Gay, about Lyndon Baines Johnson's insatiable sexual appetite and about a few others. Myths have lived and grown about these powerbrokers, leaders of the most powerful nation in the world. The press of the day, however, kept much of the presidential horseplay out of the pages of the newspapers and off the air of broadcast news.

Now comes an intriguing new book, written by Mimi Alford and titled, "Once Upon A Secret: My Affair With President John F. Kennedy And Its Aftermath." It is the detailed story of a 19-year-old White House intern who found herself courted by the handsome Democratic Party president in the early 1960s. Alford, now 69, recounts her many trysts with JFK, in the White House and on the road with the president.

The book is scheduled for release this Wednesday.

In it, Alford (her maiden name is Beardsley) tells of working in the White House press office during the summer of one of her college years. She writes about being invited to the White House pool, where she swam with the president. Later, one of his top aides, Dave Powers, called her to invite her to a party with the president. It was then, she says, that he offered to take her on a tour of the White House, and, as it happened, he took her to his bedroom, where he seduced her.

Alford speaks well of her high-powered lover, characterizing him as a man hard at tackling national and world problems, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, a point she says led him to tell her that, all things considered, he'd wish his kids "better red than dead."

Her menial job at the press office continued and Alford soon found herself traveling with JFK on his trips across the country, often, she says, being asked to stay in her own hotel room until the president summoned her.

She writes about being invited on his fateful trip to Dallas, but adds that she was engaged by then and so demurred. The president, she goes on, would tell her that he loved her and even called her during her later years at Wheaton College. It is yet more info on JFK's infidelities, this one perhaps a bit more attune with the modern-day sexual exploits of fellow Democratic President Bill Clinton, whose own flirtation with young, female interns almost brought down his administration in the 1990s.

There are other salacious incidents, but little is written about the president's wife, Jacqueline, other than that all of the sexual couplings Alford enjoyed with Kennedy came when the First Lady was out of town.

Alford, shown in photo above at age 19, is now a grandmother and is described as a retired New York church administrator...

JFK is loved because he brought inspiration to an entire world. He was not a perfect man. Ther is only one of those.

Oswald was a communist or at least an avid communist sympathizer who was too lazy to live in the “Workers Paradise” of the Soviet Union after defecting there. He was too crazy to hold a job for any length of time after returning to the U.S. Before his defection, while in the Marine Corps, he was court-martialed three times. He was not a right winger. Before assassinating Kennedy he attempted to assassinate General Edwin Walker (ret.) who was a far-right spokesman for the John Birch Society and a staunch anti-communist. Oswald was a left-wing lunatic.

Maria Elena, the reason a lot of this stuff doesn't flow your way, most likely, is because you do not read many biographies, autobiographies and books on historical events. Read books, even with good fiction, which is often based on good research, the reader may find some truth to take away. Try the library or Barnes & Noble. Blogs are entertaining, mostly filled with opinions, but shy on facts to back them up. By all means, continue to visit The Paz Files – the best blog relating to the Valley – but endeavor to broaden your world view by reading well, read books.

Agree with Art Ramirez, valleyites should read stuff other than the local newspaper and local blogs. It's a big world out there and much of what hapens elsewhere affects the Valley. Totally true.
